Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Cerebral Cavernous Malformation

Guidelines for the management of Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (CCM) have been established. These guidelines are of benefit for the clinic and patient communities by providing a comprehensive set of consensus guidelines for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cavernous malformations in the brain and/or spinal cord. This also includes presenting features such as epilepsy or hemorrhage.

A synopsis of the guidelines is available online and in print in the May 2017 issue of Neurosurgery. The full peer reviewed consensus guidelines identify knowledge gaps and controversies of opinion with the current practice that influences the best clinical judgement in individual cases. The full length guidelines are available here.

ICD CODES

To maintain the integrity of data collection for research and decision-making purposes, ICD coding to specify diagnosis in cavernous malformation is necessary.  The World Health Organization has released ICD 11, the latest version of the system used by healthcare providers to classify and code diagnosis.  In ICD 11, cerebral cavernous malformation has a unique code:

8B22.41 Cerebral Cavernous Malformation

It is important to note that the ICD 11 is not yet in use in Canada.
